The following are Sermon
Topics and BibicalTexts Sunday, June 29, 2008 Sermon Topic and Text: "The Lamb"
The men
were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the
waves obey him!" 28When he
arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,[a]
two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so
violent that no one could pass that way.
29"What do you want with us,
Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the
appointed time?" 30Some
distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.
31The demons begged Jesus,
"If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs." 32He
said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the
whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the
water. 33Those tending the
pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what
had happened to the demon-possessed men.
34Then the whole town went
out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave
their region. (Mattthew 8:27-35) (7th Sunday after Pentecost)
Epistle - Romans 7:1-6
1Do
you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to men who know the law—that
the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
2For example, by law a
married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her
husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
3So then, if she marries
another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an
adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and
is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man. 4So,
my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that
you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in
order that we might bear fruit to God.
5For when we were controlled
by the sinful nature,[a]
the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so
that we bore fruit for death. 6But
now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law
so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of
the written code.
Gospel - Matthew !0:34-42
"Do not
suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to
bring peace, but a sword. 35
For I have come to turn
" 'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law - 36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household. 37"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 40"He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me. 41Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. 42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward."
Sunday June 22, 2008 Sermon Topic and Text: "Adopted By God into His Family" 14 Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. (Romans 8:14-17) (Sixth Sunday after Pentecost) Epistle - Romans 6:15-23
15 What then? Shall we sin
because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!
16Don't you know that when
you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to
the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to
death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17But thanks be to God that,
though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form
of teaching to which you were entrusted.
18You have been set free from
sin and have become slaves to righteousness. 19I
put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves.
Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity
and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to
righteousness leading to holiness.
20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of
righteousness. 21What benefit
did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those
things result in death! 22But
now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God,
the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
23For the wages of sin is
death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Gospel - Matthew 10:26-33
26 "So do not be afraid of
them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden
that will not be made known. 27What
I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your
ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28Do
not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.
Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29Are not two sparrows sold
for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the
will of your Father. 30And
even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31So don't be afraid; you are
worth more than many sparrows. 32"Whoever
acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father
in heaven. 33But whoever
disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.
Sunday June 14, 2008 Sermon Topic and Text: "Forgiving and Faithful Fathers Lead Their Children to God . . ." Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Matthew 9:35-36) Fifth Sunday after Pentecost) Epistle - Romans 5:1-11
1Therefore, since we have
been justified through faith, we[a]have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
2through whom we have gained
access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b]
rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
3Not only so, but we[c]
also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces
perseverance; 4perseverance,
character; and character, hope. 5And
hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into
our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 6
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless,
Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very
rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man
someone might possibly dare to die.
8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were
still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since
we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved
from God's wrath through him! 10For
if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the
death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be
saved through his life! 11Not
only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation
Gospel - Matthew 9:35-10:4
35Jesus went through all the
towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good
news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.
36When he saw the crowds, he
had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like
sheep without a shepherd. 37Then
he said to his disciples, "The harvest is
plentiful but the workers are few.
38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers
into his harvest field." 1He
called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out
evil[a]
spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. 2These
are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter)
and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
3Philip and Bartholomew;
Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and
Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Zealot
and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Sunday June 8, 2008 Sermon Topic and Text: "Jesus Reaches Out To Save Us Too"
9As
Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax
collector's booth. "Follow me,"
he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10While Jesus was having
dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and
ate with him and his disciples. 11When
the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher
eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 12On
hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the
healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
13But go and learn what this
means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the
righteous, but sinners." (Matthew 9:9-13) (
Forth Sunday After Pentecost)
Epistle - Romans 4:13-25
13It was not through law that
Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of
the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
14For if those who live by
law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless,
15because law brings wrath.
And where there is no law there is no transgression. 16Therefore,
the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be
guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring—not only to those who are of the
law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father
of us all. 17As it is
written: "I have made you a father of many nations."
He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who
gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they
were. 18Against all hope,
Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just
as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
19Without weakening in his
faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was
about a hundred years old—and that Sarah's womb was also dead.
20Yet he did not waver
through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in
his faith and gave glory to God, 21being
fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
22This is why "it was
credited to him as righteousness."
23The words "it was credited to him" were written not for him
alone, 24but also for us, to
whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised
Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25He
was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our
justification.
Gospel - Matthew 9:9-13 - See Above Sunday May 25, 2008 Sermon Topic and Text - "Jesus Gives Us Absolute Security" 27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[a]; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. (John 10:27-29) ( 2nd Sunday after Pentecost) Epistle - Romans 1:8-17
8First,
I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith
is being reported all over the world.
9God, whom I serve with my
whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how
constantly I remember you 10in
my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the
way may be opened for me to come to you. 11I
long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make
you strong— 12that is, that
you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith.
13I do not want you to be
unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have
been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a
harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. 14I
am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the
foolish. 15That is why I am
so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome. 16I
am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the
salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the
Gentile. 17For in the gospel
a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith
from first to last,[a]
just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."
Gospel - Matthew 6:25-33
25"Therefore
I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or
about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than
food, and the body more important than clothes?
26Look at the birds of the
air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
27Who of you by worrying can
add a single hour to his life[ 28"And
why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow.
They do not labor or spin. 29Yet
I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like
one of these. 30If that is
how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow
is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of
little faith? 31So do not
worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What
shall we wear?' 32For the
pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that
you need them. 33But seek
first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be
given to you as well.
"Why We Can Believe and Have Faith in God's Promises"
God has raised
this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. ( Acts 2:32)
(Trinity Sunday, May 18, 2008)
"A Good Mother Is Like A Good Shepherd"
11"I
am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the
sheep. 12The hired hand is
not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he
abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and
scatters it. 13The man runs
away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father." (John 10: 11-18) (May 11, 2008, Pentecost Sunday)
